The first book I loved, the second... eh, not so much.
The Dry: The book is about a guy, Aaron Falk, who left his hometown of Kiewarra because people are asses; but he had to come back because his childhood best friend died of… unusual circumstances, and so did his whole family.
Kiewarra is this town in the middle of nowhere, which nobody knows – I can strongly relate – a place in which nobody would have thought that something like that could happen. The drought, however changed everything.
The plot is super well developed and the nuisances and little details that help build the thick story line of the book are what make it so good. The author creates the atmosphere of a small town; where everybody knows each other and every little thing is turned into hard-core gossip. When reading, it’s like you can feel the frustration of Falk (the main character), his annoyance of having to deal with every petty person with a petty grudge from twenty-something years ago in goddamn Kiewarra.
Normally, when reading a book that provides so many details, I drag my feet throughout it. I mean, the details just make everything so slow, and just… blegh. But Jane Harper manages to add all of these details and all the info necessary for us – readers – to create the images, the movie in our heads that is the book. READ IT. IT’S GOOD. DOES NOT END IN CLIFF-HANGER. EVEN BETTER.

Force of Nature: Thankfully, this book is almost not related to the first book except for some little mentions of things that happened in The Dry. Force of Nature just deals with the same main character (Falk); but the plot is completely different and so are the rest of the characters. I don’t really know why I didn’t appreciate this book as much as I did the first one. I mean, the plot was brilliant, but there was just something about it that didn’t do it for me.
The book was basically a corporate retreat gone wrong. And I know that sounds dull, and just makes you think: why would anybody write about that? But the plot is very good, in the sense that it deals with the way humans suck, and how when we are pressed and pressured, we snap.
Same as the first book now that I think about it, but the plot twist in book #1 was a lot more unexpected than the one in this book. I saw this one coming tbh.
The plot is good, and the writing is good; I think the reason I didn’t like Force of Nature that much is just the fact that it was more predictable than The Dry.
Anyhow, both books are recommended and approved. Especially, The Dry. Read them, you won’t regret it.
I LOVE YOU ALL. I LOVE YOU ALL. I LOVE YOU ALL.
