I’ve missed it. I remember reading The Mortal Instruments series and falling in love with the characters, Jace and Clary, Simon and Isabelle, Alex and Magnus. It turns out that these books are like a continuation of that, as Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn were introduced in that book series.
It was like falling into the warm embrace of a long-ago friend. Where you hazily remember laughing and crying with them, but they are different than what you remember. I remembered Jace’s sense of humor and his love for Clary, but in these books there is no imminent danger upon them forcing them to be serious and not show their caring and loving side for each other. Instead it was Emma and the Blackthorns that had danger chasing them throughout the book.
I remember them being mentioned in one of the books of The Mortal Instruments series and I remember them being absolutely forgettable even — maybe just because it’s been so long since I’ve read the books. But they are absolutely not. Emma is brave and funny and caring and kind and ruthless. Julian has so much love for his brothers and sisters he might burst. Livvy and Ty are exceptional together, twins first and partners in crime second; then there’s Dru, who’s obsessed with old horror films and is basically and emo without the depressive personality; and then there’s Tavvy, the baby of the family; of course there’s also Mark and Helen but they aren’t with them at the moment. Aside from the the Blackthorns and Emma, there’s Cristina, Emma’s best friend. She’s poised and pristine, even when hunting demons and yet she’s also wild and passionate.
“When no one tells you the truth, you learn to see under the surface.”
The Blackthorns’ dad was Turned in the Dark War and Julian killed him. Emma’s parents were murdered in the War too, and everybody thinks that it was Sebastian, but she knows it wasn’t, yet she has no clue who did it.
Gosh, the plot twists on these books! The love, the passion, the heartache... The thing is, when you’re reading a book from an author as good as Cassandra Clare, you have certain expectations, you know? Yes, well, she fulfills all of them. Ayy, I’ve fogotten what a good author she was; how her writing could swallow you and spit you back out into a world of her own making.
“There was beauty in the idea of freedom, but it was an illusion. Every human heart is chained by love.”
These books are incredibly recommended, as well as any book from this author.
I LOVE YOU ALL. I LOVE YOU ALL. I LOVE YOU ALL.
