THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED - Becky Albertalli

Wow. Just… wow. If there was ever a book that I could just say MEEEEEE, and feel absolutely identified with, it would be this one. God, I am literally Molly. I have never read a book in which a character is so absolutely relatable. It’s hard to even find a book in which the main character is not skinny and probably also beautiful. Molly is fat, she’s quirky, awkward, artsy, and plainly innocent. And, that. is. ME.

Okay so this book is about Molly, this chubby, nice, beautiful girl that is seventeen and boyfriend-less and first-kiss-less. It’s not like she needs a boyfriend, she just wants one. She wants the romance; she wants that one person that makes you feel seen; she wants that one person that reminds her that she matters. Cassie, her twin sister, is absolutely the opposite. She’s effortlessly skinny, a lesbian, and a player. So, Cassie decides that her goal in life is to get Molly a boyfriend. Molly is absolutely mortified, seeing as Cassie is probably the least subtle person ever (the effort is appreciated, though).

When I said Molly was awkward, I was not kidding. This is what happens to her – and to me – in intense social situations or when talking to a cute boy:

Me: Hey Brain. let’s think of something cool to say!

Brain: UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Me: Okay, it doesn’t have to be cool. Just something semi-coherent…

Brain: UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Me: COME ON, BRAIN, GIVE ME SOMETHING.

Brain: *white noise*

Shit. Shit. Shit.

And jeez if that’s not me. Besides that little relatable convo between one’s bran and oneself, Becky Albertalli also provides us with a very great, very important, and very relatable piece of wisdom:

When you spend so much time just intensely wanting something, and then you actually get it? It’s magic.

She’s basically telling all of us to chase it. Chase whatever it is we want the most. Chase our dreams, because the feeling we get when finally achieving or doing or getting whatever it is you wanted, it is magical. So look for that magical feeling, and don’t give up.

This book is absolutely recommended. READ IT.
